Sermon Summary

SERMON PREACHED AT THE 150TH ANNUAL SESSION OF THE ORIGINAL BEAR CREEK ASSOCIATION, September 1982.

It is not often you hear a sermon preached on the subject of an old baptist minister’s education. Much is said but few messages are given entirely on how our ministers are educated. Brother Harold Hunt speaks on the differences between an education at a theological seminary and the education of a Primitive Baptist minister.

What disadvantages do we have? He will mention the 'bucket' which we fill up with various books of men to the point we have no room for the Bible; that is, "Christ and Him crucified."

Brother Hunt uses many illustrations to color his points and names 6 reasons why we do have the advantage compared to the modern thinking to preaching the Gospel of God. His first point is ‘fear’, because “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” How does a God-called minister approach the great task of preaching?

To those who are new to Primitive Baptist preaching and want to know why our ministers are not trained in seminaries, please listen in! The Lord blessed Elder Hunt to delivered this message to a large attendance 35 years ago, and like all truth, this message is applicable today. Several ministers in our collection here on PBS.org have had a seminary education, but have typically owed their understanding of the Gospel truths by learning long after graduation.

Today, religion has it's "Religious Correct Speech." And by asserting that God calls a man to preach without the help, aid or accompaniment of a seminary education, is now labeled archaic and backward, despised at the very least. The idea that a minister's call is derived from a formal education is at the core a violation of implicit NT doctrine. No where does the NT mandate any other agent in the calling of the minister than the Holy Spirit, no other text book than the Bible, no other mentors than the fellowship of the ministry itself and no other body to certify such gifts than the churches under which such ministers are accountable.

What is underway today is an education of a minister that goes way beyond a call to declare the Gospel of Christ. Interestingly, a formal college education and seminary is a prerequisite to most all denominational pulpits. In many liberal churches pulpits have departed from the basic declarations of historical truths of Christianity for the more popular and cultural accepted norms.
