Sermon Summary

We guesstimate this sermon was delivered around 1961. Elder Copeland was a widely respected minister of his time. Note the following historical fact concerning his funeral.

"Both Elder and Sister Copeland were killed on a rain-slick highway in Cullman County, Ala., September 18, 1964. Over two thousand people attended their double funeral held September 20, 1964, at Rocky Mount Church, and at which Elders C. M. Mills, A. B. Hall, W. O. Hunt, J. B. Watts and Lasserre Bradley, Jr., officiated."

I believe there was great respect for the ministers and their messages in those days. People today are much more independent thinkers and more or less pick and choose their theology, like eating at a food buffet table. But our forefathers were systematic theologians, that is they had a system of belief that very much was held together by a coherent truth working together. I am afraid the modern church lacks a system of belief when it comes to the Bible.

You will notice in this sermon, as typical of the ministers in that era, they were unapologetic for what they believed and yet, they were not egotistical but wholly leaned on the Bible and the Living Word, Christ. He says, “The church leans on Christ, she is not independent.” Neither did he buy into the idea that the church was antiquated and insufficient for the modern age.

You will like the references to the up and coming space and missile programs and his giving testimony that our Lord was using space travel a long time ago, with out a vehicle!

Also, in this sermon, you will hear references made to a popular teaching of ministers of yesteryear, “Infant Salvation.” He mentions Herod’s hatred for the coming Messiah enough to kill all the children, 2 years and under, in Bethlehem and in all the coasts, yet "God," he says, "made provision for them in Christ!"

This is a great recording of a sermon that very much typified the style and content of messages then. We hope you will be blessed in your personal devotions!
