Sermon Summary

Many have attempted to describe what a Primitive Baptist is.
And no doubt, we speak more from experience because of the gravity of the
answer. What is a Primitive Baptist? I’ll tell you a simple statement that
describes what I have experienced that answers that question for me: “Salvation
is of the Lord and by grace- ALONE!”

In 1993, I was a “young” pastor of Columbia Primitive Baptist
Church in Burtonsville, Maryland. And on an evening in September, Elder Lasserre
Bradley Jr. had an appointment to preach. Of course, I was a “nobody” and
thankfully remain the same. But one thing was sure, then and now, I knew what I
believed and was persuaded that “Salvation is of the Lord.” But I had not always understood it until October
of 1988. And even so, I continue to learn to this day. Yes, I came up under the
influence of Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Calvinism, Absolutism, Gospel
Regeneration, and in May of '88, I heard a term for the first time, “Time Salvation”,
or what was understood as “Gospel Salvation” through the truth. For the first
time in my Christian study, I learned the distinction between regeneration and
belief in the truth. It was absolutely an amazing experience. A steady diet of
hearing men preach at Columbia—like Paul Trautner, Sonny Pyles, Kenneth
Clevenger, Cecil Darity, Sam Bryant, Wes Johnson, J.L. Compton, and Lasserre
Bradley Jr., by which I was schooled in what “By Grace Alone” truly meant. In 5 months,
I was convinced and presented myself for baptism to the church in Columbia. From
that time, these subjects were never controversial—never!

The Featured Sermon by Elder Bradley and others we have “Highlighted”
on our home page are messages that underscore the uniqueness of not only what
Primitive Baptists believe but what saith the Scriptures. And by and large, in
that day, almost all sermons hit on such themes. There are many ways to preach
salvation by grace alone, but all were attractive to me. Many ministers, however, were used of God to
sow the seeds of truth that have borne fruit in my life, for which I am
grateful.

We are humbled and rejoice today to learn that Elder Bradley passed into the eternal heavens on May 9th to be home with his Lord and Savior. I hope
that the youthful ministers among us today may glean messages from our “able
ministers of yesteryear” and be renewed in spirit to stay the course and preach salvation by grace alone. I’ve noticed so many sermons on every other topic but
this one. That night, the house was filled. There were no excuses for being
absent; it was one of the largest crowds at Columbia that evening, with Brother Lasserre Bradley preaching this message. – Stephen Aquino, Administrator of Primitive Baptist
