Sermon Summary

Here is James Compton - who in this sermon from Acts 5 says more in 14 minutes than most others in one hour! It proves that 'brevity is the soul of wisdom' - preachers take notice!

Elder Compton was always courteous in the pulpit in two ways; keeping track of his time (because his Pastor was to preach next) and keeping to his text. He was 89 when he preached this sermon!

The sermon was preached the day after he lost his brother, Howard, who years ago worked with him at the Compton's Jewelry Store in Washington D.C.

His manner was expository. He took a text, verse by verse, and commented on the verses and used every day illustrations to enable his hearers to understand his meanings.

Watch for his comments about making visitors welcome in our churches in contrast with an attitude of preeminence. He was commenting on Theudas of whom the text says, "boasting himself to be somebody."

This is certainly vintage Elder Compton. I know when he was a younger man he was quick witted and a faster preacher, but I want you to notice he did not miss a step in his 'old age!' He always told me that an elder never retires from his duty to preach the gospel.

The only ‘problem’ with Brother Compton’s message is that it was too short! Normally he would take a good 30 minutes, but you can tell from his voice the death of his brother may have played a roll in the length of this particular sermon.

God Bless!
