Sermon Summary

THE OPENING PRAYER AT THE BEAR CREEK ASSOCIATION, 1980, BY ELDER RAYMOND PRESSLEY.

According to the New Testament pattern, Primitive Baptists have three major components to their worship services: praise or Singing, Prayer, and Preaching. Here is a humble prayer recorded in 1980 that is just as powerful today. Though Elder Pressley no longer is with us, we can say, “He being dead yet speaketh.”

In his prayer, Elder Pressley prays for unity, for the Lord’s people to rejoice and sing praises, for a heart to understand and receive sustaining grace, and much more. Nothing in it will be unfamiliar to us, but it is a humble prayer worthy of our attention. I have listened to it several times, and my heart rejoices in the sweet words.

I would also like to encourage our younger men in our worship services to take note of the respect and reverence given to God. When we lead in public prayer in our churches, our prayers should not be as though God is the kid next door; our words and tone should reflect who we are speaking to: Jehovah.

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.” Psalms 100:4
