Sermon Summary

The Lord has blessed Elder Sonny Pyles with a photographic memory, which gives him the ability to easily recall scriptures. He enjoys rooting out the truth and harmony of so-called contradictions in the bible, and he digs extensively to find beautiful treasures in the scriptures. He firmly believes that the bible is the best interpreter of the bible (rather than the writings of men). Elder Pyles frequently exposes the fallacy of many errors commonly taught today. The Lord has blessed him with valuable insight into the scriptures, which is evident in his preaching.

The preaching of Elder Pyles is interesting and easy to understand. His manner of preaching, his stories and his occasional sense of humor help drive home his points and help the audience remember what he said. Of course, the Lord has to bless any minister's preaching for it to be beneficial, and Elder Pyles readily admits that he is dependent on the Lord (especially in his preaching).

This website has over 400 sermons by Elder Sonny Pyles (enough to listen to a sermon a day for over a year!). It’s hard to choose a favorite. “The Half Hinges” may be Elder Pyles’ most well-known sermon (he explains common “half” texts that are frequently quoted but misapplied, such as “My spirit shall not always strive with man”). “Here Comes the Groom” gives many insights into the marriage of Jesus Christ and his bride (since marriages in bible times were a lot different than marriages today). Let’s focus, however, on the sermon “The Ascension of Christ.”

“The Ascension of Christ” shows how that not only the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ were important but that it was essential that Jesus ascend back to heaven after his resurrection. The Old Testament high priest going into the holiest of holies with the blood of an animal sacrifice was a type and shadow fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Jesus, our High Priest, ascended (by his own power) into the holy place not made with hands to present his sacrifice unto God the Father. Doing so completed his perfect work of the atonement. Elder Pyles was blessed to show many wonderful truths and parallels in the bible in this sermon regarding the ascension of Christ.
