Sermon Summary

FROM BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF PRIMITIVE OR OLD SCHOOL BAPTIST MINISTERS BY DAVID MONTGOMERY AND MARK GREEN:

"Brother Smoot became interested in spiritual affairs early in life after God began a good work within his heart. He joined the Old School or Primitive Baptist at Little Cacapon Church in Hampshire County W.Va. and was baptized by Elder B.W. Power in November 1907. He became a member of Little Cacapon Church and was ordained to preach in the year of 1912. He pastored Little Cacapon Church from 1932 until his death."

Other churches he served: Ten Mile, Old Union, Bethel in Three Churches, and Tonoloway in Pennsylvania.

Elder J.W. preaches this sermon at Enon Church's annual meeting, September 25th, 1955 when Elder Charles Alderton was pastor. He preaches from John 6:36-39 and asks the question, "Did you know God made a will?" He says, "You must have light before you can believe anything" in relation to the doctrine of God our Savior.

His sermon very much typifies the love Old Baptists have for the doctrine of God's sovereignty in the salvation of His people as expressed in our Lord's own words recorded in the 6th chapter of John's gospel. In our modern era of today, we must ask ourselves this question, รขโ‚ฌล“Do we have the fervor for the love of this truth as they once did preach it?รขโ‚ฌย
