Elder Elmer Kitchens was born in 1912 and ordained to the ministry in 1937 at age 25. He was the pastor of Five Mile Church near Akron, Alabama for 24 years from 1955 to 1979. This is the church I grew up in. I was baptized by Elder Kitchens in December, 1978 at age 15. I was the last person he baptized before his death in June, 1979.
I found an audio recording of his preaching on the internet today.(PRIMITIVEBAPTISTSERMONS.ORG) It is the first time I have heard him preach since he passed away over 30 years ago.
I'm thankful for the burden many ministers have today to preach on a variety of subjects as we face so many battles with the philosophies of this ungodly world. However, in light of some of the doctrines which have troubled our people in recent years, it was a blessing for me to hear this message. I was so encouraged to know that what I believe and preach today is in complete harmony with what I heard Elder Kitchens preach when I was a child.
I would like to encourage all of you to listen to this message which clearly distinguishes between eternal and time salvation. Also, as you listen to the message, examine yourself and see if you have the same spirit of humility which comes across in his preaching. Oh that we might again see ourselves as "the chief of sinners" and, consequently, esteem others better than ourselves.
