Sermon Summary

"Amazing Grace", by John Newton, is the most popular hymn sung at Primitive Baptist churches. But how much do we know about the author? In this lecture, Iain Murray expounds on the life of John Newton.
From his birth in 1725, Murray details Newton's life as a child under the watchful care of his mother who taught her son the Scriptures and Isaac Watts' Hymns. But his mother became seriously ill and died leaving 7 year old Newton to a boarding school, his father often away at sea. At 10 he would join his father at sea which begins a long journey. Find out how wretched his life became, so full of despair and rebellious rage as Newton degenerates during his days at sea, until in March of 1748 the Lord had mercy and opened his understanding and love for the Gospel. From a young Christian to a slave himself, to a ship Captain and ultimately a preacher - this account will make you appreciate more when you sing "Amazing Grace." Learn the lessons of the power of sin and the power of the Grace of Christ in John Newton's life.
