Lawrence Mooney

Lawrence Mooney

From the Biographical History of Primitive or Old School
Baptist Ministers, Volume II, by David Montgomery and Mark Green, 2001.

Lawrence J. Mooney was born on January 18, 1921. He was
baptized on August 23, 1936, at Tickanetley Primitive Baptist Church by Elder
T.C. Mooney. He was married on June 14, 1947, to Annette Smith, daughter of
H.L. Smith. They had four children.

Brother Mooney writes: “I served three and a half years in
the Air Force during World War II.
At a very early age, I realized I was a sinner and labored
in that condition for several years. It seemed that I grew worse, though
praying all the time that the Lord would save me. Then one fourth Sunday
morning, it was revealed to me that God had already saved me, and it was my
duty to join the church and follow Him.
Even in my teenage years, I had a fear that some day it
would be my duty to preach, and when I had the opportunity, I would read the Bible.
The fear and dread became heavier as I became older. I couldn’t preach, and there
were plenty of preachers in the churches at that time. Little did I know that the
preachers at that time would soon be no more.

After I was ordained, Chattanooga Church called me to serve
them on the second Sunday of each month. Blue Ridge Church called for me to
serve them on the first Sunday, and I was called as an assistant pastor at my
home church, Tickanetley, on the third and fourth Sundays. I served Chattanooga
Church for a year, and they called me for another year. I enjoyed the meetings,
and the church was good to me, but at the same time, Blue Ridge Church. At present,
in the year 2000, I am still serving at Blue Ridge Church. It is a lovely Band;
the Lord has been so good to me, and the church has too. I have served my home church
as a pastor or co-pastor ever since my ordination.
I have visited other churches in six States. Everywhere I
have visited and preached, the people have been so good to me. I love the Lord’s
people. The Lord has been so good to me.”

O B I T U A R Y

Elder Lawrence Mooney, age 91, of Roy Rd.
