Pictured: Elder Kenneth and Sis. Lorene Martin, with their children Sis. Ann (Martin) Williams (age 6) and Elder Don Martin (age 4) Slaton, Texas 1946.
Elder Kenneth Battle Martin was born to William Nathaniel and Kibbie Ellen (Compton) Martin on April 2, 1915 in Handley, Texas. The Martin’s were blessed with a total of four children, Fowler, Rollie, Bro. Kenneth and his twin sister Kythe. The family lived in New Mexico in 1923, before moving to Slaton, Texas (south of Lubbock) in 1924. It was there he met and married Lorene “Rene” Riley on December 24, 1935. Along with Sis. Ann, the Martin’s were blessed with two other children, William David (Billy) and Kenneth Don Martin. Sadly, their oldest child William David died of diphtheria at the age of 3.
Bro. Kenneth joined the Church and was baptized the second Sunday in October of 1937 at Lubbock, Texas by Elder P. D. (Perry Delma) Ausmus.. Elder Ausmus was a faithful servant who labored in the west Texas area for over 30 years. Bro. Kenneth made his first effort to preach the gospel in June of 1943 in Edgewood, New Mexico. He would be ordained to the ministry during the 5th Sunday weekend in July of 1947.
During his ministry, Elder Martin would serve as pastor of several Churches, they included the Elk Creek Primitive Baptist Church (Elk Creek, Oklahoma), Snyder Primitive Baptist Church (Snyder, Texas), Little Hope Primitive Baptist Church (Scurry County, Texas), New Salem Primitive Baptist Church (Floydada, Texas), Concord Primitive Baptist Church (Afton, Texas), Memphis Primitive Baptist Church (Memphis, Texas), Portales Primitive Baptist Church (Portales, New Mexico), Hale Center Primitive Baptist Church (Hale Center, Texas) and the Littlefield Primitive Baptist Church (Littlefield, Texas).

Elder Martin had the sweet privilege of baptizing a large number of saints during his ministry and certainly none were more sweet than baptizing his daughter. Sis. Ann came forward and joined the Hale Center Primitive Baptist Church in 1950 and was baptized by her father, Elder Kenneth Martin. The baptism actually took place in the First Baptist Church’s baptistery, because the Hale Center Church did not have a baptistery. Sis. Ann would later move her membership to the New Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Floydada, Texas. |
