FROM THE BOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF PRIMITIVE OR OLD SCHOOL BAPTIST MINISTERS BY DAVID MONTGOMERY AND MARK GREEN:
ELDER MAURICE H. CHAPMAN
FROM AN OBITUARY IN “GOSPEL WITNESS” WRITTEN BY ELDER JAMES BIBLER:
Maurice H. Chapman was born March 16, 1907, to Howard and Bessie German Chapman in Gratiot, Ohio. We were in the same graduating class in the Newark High School, where we received our diplomas in 1925. In 1930, when I was in the state of Georgia, Maurice wrote to me telling of his approaching marriage to Miss Hazel B. Claggett. Their marriage and home proved a blessing and was noted for its hospitality. Several years had passed away when a complete change came into the life of Brother Maurice; he began to tremble when the
gospel was preached by the pastor, Elder Ivan Hindall. Then in August of 1948 he asked for a church home with the Primitive Baptists. He was baptized, then given the right hand of fellowship and was welcomed into the church at Newark, Ohio. The Newark Church called for the ordination of Brother Chapman to the office of the gospel ministry. In February 1954, Brother Maurice became one of the ordained elders in the Newark Church and was soon asked to be the pastor. He was also called to pastor the Clinton Church, Columbus, Ohio, and the Mt. Pisgah Church. Elder Chapman traveled in forty-seven states and preached in many of them. He passed away in Florida during a church service. |
