FROM THE BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF PRIMITIVE OR OLD SCHOOL BAPTIST MINISTERS BY DAVID MONTGOMERY AD MARK GREEN:
ELDER CLIFFORD GOWENS
Elder Clifford B. Gowens of Wylie, Texas, son of Elder Sylvester and Minnie Gowens, was born in Crosbyton, Texas, on July 14, 1942. Realizing the need for baptism and seeing the beauty and comfort of the church, he sought a home with the Primitive Baptist Church at Lubbock, Texas, in September 1950 at the age of eight years, and was baptized by Elder Willie Fox.
He was married on June 5, 1965 to Lenora Winfield, and to this union two girlswere born, Nikki and Dena. Moving to the Dallas, Texas area in 1970, he and his wife soon there after joined the First Primitive Baptist Church of Dallas, while making their home in the nearby suburb of Wylie.
He was ordained to the office of deacon in 1974, and then to the full work of the gospel ministry on May 8, 1977 at this same church in Dallas. He was soon called to pastor churches at Blossom, Texas, and Farmersville, Texas. In April
1979 he was called to pastor the First Primitive Baptist Church at Dallas, and serves them in this capacity to the present day in 1999. Feeling the weight of sin, and unworthiness to preach the gospel, he resisted the call to the ministry for sometime. But while meditating upon the sacrifice and death of our Savior, he penned the words to a song "He Died For Me." Realizing that he was exceeding sinful, and the Savior was perfect, yet He gave His life for such worthless beings, the thought came to him, "Since He gave His all for me, even His life, who am I that I should refuse to preach His gospel, and to tell of His wonderful saving grace?" |
